in search of a soap shaker

Does anyone out there know where you can buy soap shakers? I want to give up on the detergent thing and remember soap shakers from when I was a kid. Can I find one anywhere? No!

I think there would be a good market for them.

We were only just talking about these this week. I can remember how the soap would go in a metal/ mesh cover with a handle and you would 'swoosh' it through your water. Sunlight was the soap used from memory. Is this the sort of thing you are talking about? I am not sure if they are still being made, but would love to get one or make one.

You can just put your soap scraps in the end of an old stocking - works the same way :-)

Hi Alana,

Everything old is new again, LOL - they are in demand as "shabby chic" display items I gather, which is why I haven't been able to find one either! They come in the the thrift shops every so often but you have to be quicker than me to nab them. Have you tried eBay? They pop up every now and then - but usually sell for more than I am prepared to pay, dammit! Good luck :-)

Haven't seen a soap shaker in a very long time. I put the soap inside the leg of an old stocking. It does the job for washing garden dirt off in the laundry as well as sudsing up in the kitchen.

Yes - one of those swooshy things. How could something so useful vanish? Will try the stocking idea thanks - suspect the Object of My Affections will take exception to such a thing, but we will see ...

I have discovered an alternative, although it does involve buying something new. The coffee/tea shop at Vic Market - McIvers - have really gigantic ones of those things you can put loose leaf tea in, rather than using a tea bag - I don't know what they're called. Anyway, the really big size costs about $11 and is big enough to put half a bar of soap in.

Tea infuser and that is a brilliant idea!
I'm going to search for the biggest stainless steel one I can find!

I asked the Vermont Country Store about soap shakers, as that is all we used when I was a young woman. They have not responded. I hate to throw soap scraps away, and will try the stocking method.

Two small hand-held strainers: one turned upside down and tied at the end with a (free) twist tie. If you grate the soap with a vegie grater it works quite well: much like the original.

The Soap shaker is BACK!
We were so frustrated at not being able to buy a new soap shaker we decided to have them manufactured and here they are. They are made from mild steel and then zinc coated. We had them made locally and as they aren't made in either China or India, where child labour is still rife, the price reflects that. The cost of manufacture in a first world country isn't cheap. We are the only people in the world to have them manufactured again so if you would like one just go to www.selfsufficiencystore.com
There is a short video on how to use one as well as a recipe on how to make your own castille soap. Sunlight soap is petrol based if I remember correctly.

Hi there are now new wire soap shakers at
www.selfsufficiencystore.com
Castile soap is the best to use for washing dishes as there are still bubbles at the end of the wash.

Hi! I know this post is old enough that you've probably found a solution, but I found soap shakers on Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/listing/76235017/soap-shaker-from-nz?ref=v1_other_1e (there may be others, but I found this looking for tallow soap, so I haven't checked). I found your post because I was trying to figure out what a soap shaker is. *lol* Still not positive, but I think I'm getting the idea based on the other commenters.
